The first-generation Camaro is one of the most desirable models of the muscle car era. Lasting from 1967-1969, this platform continues to be the most popular (and valuable) Camaros of all time. This documented 1968 RS represents the model well. Not only is this one a numbers-matching 327ci 4-speed car, but it also comes with an original window sticker, bill of sale, Protect-O-Plate, and more.
This car was built in the first week of January 1968 at the Norwood plant and was sold on 3-18-68 by Hornbeck Chevrolet of Carbondale, PA. The original window sticker and purchase contract show the Rally Sport (RS) option which includes hidden headlights, revised backup lights, and special trim, all of which are present. The car wears an older repaint in its original color of Matador Red and also has bumblebee stripe in front. The black vinyl top looks great and also appears on the documentation. The chrome, trim, moldings, and emblems are all complete and in good condition throughout. The underside is free of any rust problems or repairs which may be partly from the dealer undercoating that remains largely intact. While originally equipped with P01 wheel covers and whitewalls, this Camaro has been updated with Rally wheels wearing attractive BF Goodrich Silvertown redlines.
The engine is the numbers-matching 327 ci V8. The engine plant stamping shows an assembly date of 12-21-67 which is right in line with the vehicle assembly date. The VIN derivative stamping is present as well. Originally a 2-barrel intake manifold, the engine now has a Weiand setup with a 4-barrel carburetor. The 4-speed transmission offers smooth shifting is hard to beat for a fun driving experience. The drum brakes are in good working condition while the optional power steering is always appreciated in a parking lot.
The code 749 black houndstooth interior with custom bucket seats is a very sharp package; it is such a step up from basic black vinyl! This feature also appears in the original paperwork as does the center console. The woodgrain accents are a nice touch too. The interior has been redone at some point and retains a completely stock appearance right down to the working AM radio. The headlights / doors, backup lights, courtesy lights, turn signals, horn, wipers, heater, defroster, and parking brake all function properly. There is also a matching spare tire in the trunk along with a bumper jack.
This Camaro has a lot to offer. It is a true 327ci 4-speed RS with nice options and is not all rotted away or crudely modified. It comes with some great documentation that also includes a copy of the original title from 1968. And finally, it is a turn-key car that is one of the most endearing models of the 1960’s.
