untitledGeiger Counter - PRI Model 106B - Old School Meets New - Calibrated
This is a Precision Radiation Instruments, Inc. Model 106B Geiger counter that has been retrofitted with solid-state circuitry and a modern LND 725 Geiger tube.
This 1955 Precision Radiation Instruments, Inc. Model 106B is one of the classic Geiger counters that were used in the great Uranium boom in the 1950s. It originally used a 1B85 Geiger tube. These tubes had an aluminum wall and were very susceptible to collapsing. It is rare now to see an intact 1B85 tube. The modern LND 725 tube is the same size and shape of the original tube but it is much more reliable because of having a stainless steel wall. This tube is one of the industry standards today.
If you are interested in the romance of the late 1950s when prospectors roamed the country seeking Uranium and the ,000 dollars or more that the Atomic Energy Commission payed for a discovery then you will love this counter. It performs like the original - even down to the headphones with pin plugs and the flashing lamp indicating each Geiger pulse. The tube-type Geiger counters of the day invariably had a flashing neon light to indicate each Geiger pulse. This was because it was a simple and relatively cheap addition with the high voltages required by vacuum tubes. A modern LED accurately simulates the original neon lamp in this instrument.
The tenth picture shows the calibration with a Geo-Electronics pulse calibrator (not included).
This is a rugged instrument well suited for field use. Note that it comes with a fitted, steel case.
Whether searching for hot rocks or just an interest in history, this is the instrument for you.
