    Description

Svanströms Sweden by Conway Stewart c1928 Burgundy Marbled Brilliant Pen No. 1
Svanströms Sweden by Conway Stewart c1928 Burgundy Marbled Brilliant Pen No. 1. Original box and papers. Pat. No. 297194. Made in England. Imported to Sweden by Svanströms an office supply store in Sweden founded in 1857 and still in business today. Svanströms used some other pen manufacturers to supply their retail stores with pens, but Conway Stewart was their main supplier. Deep imprint. It appears as if this pen was used very little. But, there is a bend in the original Warranted 1
    st
Quality 14CT Gold nib. This can be repaired or replaced with another Warranted nib. Conway Stewart produced these Svanströms pens with a Warranted Nib (as in this pen), but rarely when they had an overstock of Conway Stewart nibs. The box is marked with a label indicating that the pen was supplied with a FINE nib as has here. Button filler. 4 5/8 inches with cap closed on barrel. Wonderful unrestored condition. Original box has some damages as seen with one end flap loosened, but it is fully intact having survived nearly 100 years! Original paperwork showing the entire Conway Stewart Svanströms Pennserie line of pens and prices (in SEK) on one side and button filling instructions and illustrations on the other side. This Svanströms pen cost 15- SEK in 1928! Rare pen, but even rarer since this specific color pattern (Marbled burgundy/black) is not documented to exist in the Brilliant Pen on Jonathan Donahaye’s website.
From the Jonathan Donahaye CS website:
Svanstroms: (Models exported to Sweden and imprinted "Import")
Brilliant Pen: flat-top & blind cap, 2 bands BF (c1928)
    Marbled blue/black
    Marbled green/black
More information about the Svanstrom - Montblanc relationship in Denmark, from Claus Holten and Poul Lund (Montblanc in Denmark, sternchanze.dk, 2013):
Frans Svanstrom & Co stationary store was founded in 1857 in Stockholm, Sweden. In the 1890's Svanstrom introduced the fountain pen to Sweden with Waterman, Swan Pen (Mabie Todd & Co.) and Caw's safety pen.
Svanstrom obtained Montblanc distribution rights for Sweden in 1921, the same year that Alfred Th. Oberg obtained the distribution rights for Montblanc in Denmark. See photo of Montblanc car in from of Svanstroms store in Stockholm, Sweden.
Svanstrom also imported and distributed a line of quality pens made by Conway Stewart with brand names such as Svanstrom Royal Pen, Svanstrom Superior Pen, and Svanstroms Visible Pen.
In the 1940's the Danish Monblanc factory made at least one model for Svanstroms known as The Svanstrom Royal Pen. This pen is identical to Montblanc 246 piston filler. The only differences other than the imprint of course, is that the Svanstrom pen has a black top instead of a white star, and the nib is a Warranted nib.
Svanstroms stationary stores still exist today in major Swedish towns.
